In the season of Giving, Stephen James gives back to the community.

This December Stephen James MINI held a competition to guess how many teddies can you fit in the MINI!

They placed a car outside the entrance of the David Lloyds Leisure centre in Enfield and lots of people took part guessing everything from 50 to 380. The winner received a family hamper from Marks and Spencer.

One of Stephen James core values is to ‘Make a difference’ so what better way to spread some Christmas cheer to donate the teddies to the children at the King Fisher Ward at Chase Farm Hospital. The Kingfisher ward sees children from new born up to the age of 16 years and receives no funding.

Each child on the ward was given a teddy, reindeer, snowman or penguin cuddly toy and the staff have held on to the remaining toys to give out over the Christmas period.

New BMW 1 Series Launching 17 September 2011

On September 17th 2011, the Stephen James Group will be launching BMW's brand new 1 Series with revised engines, a more striking design, roomier cabin and improved technology.

The first difference you will notice is the front with the large ‘kidney shaped’ front grille and bigger lights on both the front and back. This latest edition is also larger than the existing model, with an extra 83mm in length and 14mm in width. This means the rear occupants now get an extra 21mm legroom.

The New 1 Series is more eco-friendly, with reduced CO2 emissions and improved economy across the range. This is helped with Auto Start Stop technology, which is now standard in both manual and automatic versions. There are five variants available at launch: two petrol engined-models, and three diesels.

Next year, BMW are launching a 116d EfficientDynamics model which is claimed to return 74.3mpg while emitting just 99g/km of CO2, thus making it exempt from road tax.

There are two range-topping versions the Urban and Sport. The Urban is more luxury focused, getting a wide choice of exterior styling options including white wheels, wing mirrors and trim, and a slatted grille. The Sport models have different alloys, revised bumpers and M-Sport suspension.

In the meantime, the line-up comprises of revised versions of existing engines which are now quicker and more eco-friendly.

Sales start in September, with prices kicking off from £19,375 for the entry-level 116i. The 118i costs £21,985. The 116d is the starting point of the diesel line-up, and is priced from £20,195, while the 118d weighs in at £22,030. Topping the 1-Series range is the 120d, which is £23,480.

London 2012 hopefuls receive cars from Stephen James BMW/MINI

We've had a busy time here at the Stephen James Group lately, what with all the fanfare surrounding BMW's sponsorship of the London 2012 Olympic games. As we mentioned on this Blog back in May the Stephen James Group has sponsored four Olympic and Paralympic athletes leading up to the Olympic Games in 2012. This sponsorship involved us supplying them with a BMW or MINI of their choice and the last few weeks we have been handing those cars over to the happy sportspeople.

Montell Douglas was the first to receive her BMW 1 Series Convertible at Stephen James Enfield on the 14th July.

On the 14th May BMW put on the Drive to London 2012 day. At Stephen James we arranged a fun packed day for our customers and visitors to really experience what BMW and MINI can offer.

So we ordered up a whole host of fun things, including a racing pod, Batak reaction wall and Wii with an Olympic themed sports game. We provided great refreshment with pop-corn and ice cream machines as well as a hugely successful non-alcoholic fruit drinks bar with Olympic themed drinks.

Action for Kids is one of the local charities Stephen James Enfield supports and with whom we are actively involved. We met a few of the children and helpers at the Vision and Values day in January. A while ago we found out their minibus, although in good order engine wise, was definitely in need of some bodywork repair and respraying.

Stephen James offered to help out and we asked some of our bodyshop team if they would be willing to give up some of their own time to repair and respray the minibus. They willingly agreed and have done a magnificent job as you can see in the photograph.

Guys we cant thank you enough, for such a great job and such willingness to help out others less fortunate than ourselves. Big thanks also to Dave Roberts for organising everything and making the process run so smoothly. You should be proud of yourselves!

Who Is Stephen James?

I have recently been writing an internal document called ‘Living the Values’. In the introduction there is a section about the history of the company and I thought you might find this part interesting………………. In 1972, my father bought a used car showroom called ‘Stephen James Autos’. Mr. Stephen James never existed. The showroom was named after the previous owner’s two sons: Stephen and James. The new showroom boasted recently fitted signage featuring the Stephen James name above the door. Duncan decided that it was a shame to get rid of the new signs, so he changed the name of his own company instead! We have been delighted to remain under this banner for almost 40 years.

The All New BMW 6 Series Convertible

BMW has a rich heritage when it comes to producing dynamic and engaging cars that are also capable of a grand tour – with the roof up or down. The BMW 327 Coupé and Sports Convertible of the late Thirties and the BMW 503 Coupé and Convertible from the Fifties were ideal in this regard. The new BMW X3 is set to raise the bar in the premium sports activity market this year when the latest model goes on sale in the UK. With what will be the lowest-emission four-wheel drive model in the sector, the first to have start-stop with auto transmission, unparalleled agility, significantly upgraded cabin and a raft of sector-first technology, the new BMW X3 will set a new benchmark.

With a class-leading diesel engine, numerous chassis configurations courtesy of Variable Damper Control, as well as UK specific equipment packages and innovations such as Head-up Display and online connectivity, thanks to ConnectedDrive, the new BMW X3 offers customers the perfect sporty four-wheel drive vehicle, whatever their activity.

The new BMW X3 combines BMW’s X character with a dynamically stretched silhouette to produce an elegant, durable and sporting car. The typically characteristic upright kidney grille and triangular headlight arrangement of BMW X models is reflected in the front end of the X3 ensuring a powerful presence, further emphasised by the flared wheelarches and short wheelbase. Meanwhile the horizontal rear lines on the rear emphasise the X3’s robust character.

High-grade materials and intelligent packaging are integral to the new BMW X3’s interior. As always, the asymmetrical instrument panel and centre console are orientated towards the driver, while the latest generation iDrive, with 6.5-inch screen as standard, ensures all infotainment capabilities are easily accessible. The 8.8-inch high-resolution screen of the navigation system in the Professional Multimedia package featured in the new BMW X3 is the largest on-board monitor in its segment.

Throughout the cabin are a large number of storage compartments, trays and cup holders. The three rear seats offer outstanding comfort for travelling long distances and significantly more leg and elbow room compared to its predecessor.

With a volume of between 550 and 1,600 litres, the luggage compartment of the new BMW X3 is also one of the best in its segment. But it is not just about pure volume – useable space is essential to the SAV customer, and the new BMW X3 has an adaptable interior which can be changed to suit personal requirements.

The rear seat backrests can be split 60:40 as standard or as an option 40:20:40 where the three segments can be folded down either individually or together. In this way it is possible to adapt the luggage compartment according to requirements.

The drivers’ Sports Activity Vehicle

The first generation BMW X3 set the bar when it came to the driving dynamics of this type of vehicle, and the second generation builds on that exceptional agility with newly conceived suspension technology, electronically controlled driver assistance and advanced four-wheel drive.

For drivers who want to personalise the feel of their BMW X3, Variable Damper Control is available for the first time on this model. The electronically controlled dampers adapt to road surface conditions and the style of driving, while the driver is able to influence the action of the dampers by means of the Drive Dynamic Control system.

This function enables the driver to choose between Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes using a button on the centre console. As well as damping behaviour, it can adjust the character of the accelerator, engine response, power steering weight, DSC response thresholds and – depending on desired options – the shifting dynamics of the automatic transmission.

Electric Power Steering, is incorporated in the BMW X3 for the first time, allowing precise handling and increased efficiency. Variable sports steering is also available for the first time as an option, and reduces the degree of steering movement necessary to turn the front wheels in various conditions including parking, cornering and swerving manoeuvres.

As standard, the new BMW X3 comes with xDrive permanent four-wheel drive technology, an electronically controlled system that ensures variable distribution of drive to the front and rear axles. Linked to DSC, Dynamic Stability Control, xDrive can counteract oversteer or understeer at an extremely early stage, and help to control the car through bends by sending increased drive to the rear wheels while, if needed, braking the inside rear wheel to increase the car’s mid-bend agility and traction.

The commitment to offering the most complete driving on and off-road experience in the sector means the new BMW X3 also features completely redeveloped suspension technology with a double-joint spring-strut axle at the front and a multi-link rear axle.

Pricing and specification

The new BMW X3 xDrive20d SE is even better value than its predecessor. At £30,490 OTR, it is actually £115 less than the outgoing model, yet is equipped as standard with Nevada leather upholstery, two-zone air conditioning, iDrive controller and colour display.

The new BMW X3 can be specified with a range of innovative features. The choice of options range from a panoramic sunroof, high-end audio equipment and the Professional Multimedia package with hard-disk storage, to automatic boot lid operation and a tow coupling with electronically pivoting ball head.

The choice of systems offered under the BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance banner is also unique in the segment, and include Head-up Display, Adaptive Headlights, High-beam Assistant and reversing camera including Top View, giving a 360 degree panoramic view for the driver.

Following extensive research of buying habits of previous BMW X3 buyers, the new generation model can be specified with several packages that bring together the most popular options at cost-effective prices. These packages include:

MINI Connected MINI Connected is a new system available on the LCI range bringing someting akin to BMW iDrive to the MINI loving public.

Providing greater connectivity in conjunction with an iPhone. MINI Connected allows various functions to be displayed via the display screen. Below is a quick overview of some of the key features and highlights:

Web-radio - the whole world of online radio entertainment available in a MINI. Highlights include a vast array of radio stations available from taround the world; different search options to find the right station and full information on the tracks as they play; a MINI top station list; and with the iPhone this feature can be used anywhere no just when in the MINI.
Facebook and Twitter access - access your social network form your MINI. Read news and actual status updates from your community and post pre-defined messages.
RSS News feeds- current news displayed on the screen from any source offering RSS feeds, and a readout function with optional voice control.
Google send to car - plan your route and send it to your car via home computer or smart phone.
Google local search - whether you're looking for pizza or a cinema MINI Connected allows you to find location based information using different categories for fast and convenient search. You can use the same functionality on your iPhone even when no in your MINI.
Dynamic music - be your own DJ whilst driving your MINI. Different tracks will be available to download, the music changes dependant on acceleration speeds, create your own music uniquely tailored for each trip.
Voice control - if specified as an option this gives voice control to a number of functions in the car including telephone books, radio and vehicle settings; it also gives a read-out function in combination with MINI Connected.

The New LCI MINI Range

The LCI MINI Range is now out and it is quite a comprehensive update to the MINI Range, both in terms of inproved engine performance and exterior/interior styling. Peanuts

I was reading a book by Max Lucado recently. In an early chapter he recounts the story of George Washington Carver. Born in 1864, this scientist, botanist, professor and inventor went on a quest. Carver was attempting to regenerate the post Civil-war land which had been decimated by years of cultivating cotton. When an invasion of vicious beetles wiped out the remaining crops, Carver persuaded the farmers to start over with alternatives. Amongst these options was the common peanut which was planted and flourished in the difficult soil. Soon the peanuts were flourishing and the crop yield was fantastic. Problem solved you may think. But there was only one problem; demand wasn’t high for the peanuts which were now being plucked from the fields faster than females rushing to the January sales! Carver was not discouraged and set his mind to discovering every possible use of the peanut. He eventually identified more than 300 hundred products that could be extracted from the humble seeds. His contribution over the years was so significant that the United States still marks a day in Carver’s honour! What’s my point? I think we each have a peanut: a unique character, a passion, gifts, and relationships which we should dedicate ourselves to getting the most out of. How can we maximise what we have been given? How can we create work places and spaces that allow people to find their peanut?

Beyond Ourselves Golf Day 25th June 2010

On Friday 25th June, our charity Beyond Ourselves, held a Golf Day at Bush Hill Park Golf Club. 80 golfers enjoyed a sun filled game of golf. At the 13th hole, refreshments of Pimms, beer and other delights were served. They also had the opportunity to win a pair of golf shoes with a Nearest the Pin competition, sponsored by Reid & Co. A couple of players thought the prize was furthest from the pin unfortunately, but we tried to turn a blind eye! Following the golf the evening was opened up to friends and family and we had a BBQ for 200 people. It was a beautiful warm summer’s evening and our live band were able to play outside. Jodie Collins, Director of Beyond Ourselves, talked briefly about the charity, following which Ben Collins, our Group Managing Director, put his skills as an auctioneer to the fore, and we were delighted to raise £11,500 in the auction and raffle. At our most recent monthly dealership briefings it was really encouraging to hear of individuals beginning to take ownership of the SJ Core Values. I have often said that whilst these remain on a board room wall or as a hobby horse of an HR department they remain corporate jargon and are destined for failure. When individuals really take hold of values and make themselves ambassadors for them they come to life in a very dynamic way. We have set up Value Action Groups at every dealership – it’s the opportunity for any member of SJ to get involved and drive the way we do business in the coming years. We are only just beginning to see signs of this early individual adoption but these are exciting times………………

Sausages, Sponsorship and Salad

Beyond Ourselves, the charity which was born out of Stephen James' desire to use its time, skill and money to help at home and abroad , launched its child sponsorship programme on Sunday.

There was a BBQ to mark the occasion and to celebrate making it this far on the charity's journey. The food is definitely worth a mention - it was superb!

This was the first phase of a sponsorship programme that will see over 1000 Zambian children receiving school uniforms, qualified teaching, one nutritious hot meal every school day and weekly medical care by the end of 2010.

The cost to the sponsor is only £12.50 a month - the benefit to the children is extremely significant.

Allowing to Germinate

Almost 3 months on from our Vision and Values week I am beginning to feel very uncomfortable. I am realising through listening to others wisdom, by my own experience and some extra reading that my role in this isn't what I thought I had signed up for. You see I thought that forever and a day I would champion the values and deliver motivational talks on where they'll take us as a company. A sort of Superman meets Dale Winton type figure. For sure there will be some of that along the way. However the real successes happen if the people that are Stephen James really own the values for themselves. The values will come alive only if individuals put their own cut on the values and begin to create their own value centred stories. So what do I do? I must provide space and the environment to see these ideas germinate. I must encourage individual expressions of our 5 values, not some corporate mantra that we chant in unison. I must ride the range and get round the dealerships and encourage the new values champions who will be emerging. It is hard to consider giving away what has been 'my' idea for over 3 years and only in the public domain for 3 months. But to have any chance of success our values story needs to be played out with me as a peripheral figure, and that's hard to take!

In the event of an Emergency the system sends an automatic signal to BMW Service immediately if the crash sensors in the airbags are activated so that the right help arrives on the scene faster. In the event of a breakdown, BMW Assist activates the BMW breakdown service, connecting to Mobile Service and transmitting the relevant vehicle data. Your BMW Emergency Service will be by your side as quickly as possible, helping you get back onto the road. Should you be driving on the German Autobahn network, BMW Assist also provides reliable and up-to-the-minute traffic information, thanks to a system of more than 4,000 sensors positioned along the motorways that measure traffic congestion and transmit the results in real time. Any BMW Vehicle fitted with Satellite Navigation and Bluetooth Tele-matics can enjoy the benefits of BMW Assist free of charge for the first 3 years. A small fee applies thereafter. Wake Up and Smell The Service

A customer service culture is what many business leaders speak about but our experience as consumers suggests that many businesses have a long way to go. Sometimes its the little things that can surprise us. Its the attention shown to the detail that counts. Its the small things, that are often big things at that moment to us, that make the difference. We just want people to go the extra mile and make life easy for us. All too often we fall short of providing that level of care. But we are determined to make Stephen James a place where your individual needs are catered for. Occasionally though there are certain times when you know you've got it right. For that moment you are in the sweet spot of customer service. Recently I heard this from one of our parts advisors. Whilst speaking to one of our trade customers, he overheard in the background a conversation about not having any coffee left to make a mid morning drink. Dave kept quiet, served the next customer and arranged the parts for delivery. However whilst doing so he popped upstairs and emptied some coffee into a bag and got it dropped down at the same time as the parts to the customer. Needless to say the customer was stunned……. MINI One Convertible

Since its launch in 2009 the enduring appeal of the MINI Convertible has been proven by strong demand. So far it has only been possible to buy a Cooper, Cooper S or John Cooper Works Convertible, so the introduction of a One Convertible provides a much lower entry point for keen fresh air fans. Open-air driving pleasure in that unique MINI style is now more economical, with the new MINI One Convertible entering the market powered by the latest generation of MINI’s four-cylinder petrol engine. This MINI Convertible-specific option records the amount of time spent with the roof down. It is, after all, the principal purpose of owning a soft-top MINI. Unrivalled Service

When my wife and I were away last month I was struck by the many examples of unrivalled service we encountered as we travelled. One that has really stuck in my mind is our encounter with Etenal.

We were on our way to the airport and were both extremely thirsty, the weather was approaching 40C and the vehicle not air conditioned. We asked the driver if it would be possible to stop for some water, explaining that it would be a real bonus if we were able to buy some fresh fruit as well, which we could eat at the airport. This would be preferable to the internal in flight offering.

The car was prepaid so the driver had nothing to gain in terms of an increased fare. Nonetheless he went out of his way to take us to an out of town supermarket saying that the quality of the fruit was higher. When we had parked, he jumped out of the car and ran off to find a trolley, whilst we laboured in the humidity towards the building.

By the time we arrived at the supermarket doors there was a smiling face and a trolley to greet us. He then gave us a guided tour of the aisles to save us time, and pointed out the best local goods.

To top off the service experience he then carried our bags back to the car before driving us to the airport.

I thanked Etenal for his efforts. He had done everything that he possibly could have done to enhance our experience. I think that is what unrivalled service is - doing whatever is within your grasp to astonish. Any company must aspire to have a team of Etenals - long term it makes economic sense.

New BMW 5-Series Saloon

BMW is pleased to announce the next chapter in the story of one of the most successful cars ever to have been produced. The new, sixth generation BMW 5 Series Saloon. The very first BMW 5 Series Saloon appeared in 1972 and every incarnation since then has raised the bar in terms of design, engineering or technology. The latest BMW 5 Series Saloon similarly sets new standards and is the first in its class to feature Auto Start-Stop, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a double-wishbone front suspension. The latest BMW has the longest wheelbase in its class at 2,968mm, creating a greater feeling of interior space. Customers specifying the optional glass sunroof benefit from a larger roof panel that allows light to flood in highlighting the generous rear cabin. Inside, the cabin features many of the sporting but luxurious quality and comfort features found in the BMW 7 Series, the asymmetrically designed centre console, multifunctional steering wheel and the use of Black Panel technology. Black Panel technology integrates the centre console into the trim of the car. High-resolution electronic displays are visible when needed, but when not in use discreetly blend in to form an elegant black band across the interior. The BMW 5 Series Saloon features the highest ever level of standard specification for the model. All models coming with Dakota leather upholstery, BMW Professional Radio and Bluetooth telephone preparation. Buyers of the BMW 5 Series Saloon will be able to choose between three diesel powerplants (520d, 525d and 530d) and four petrol engines (523i, 528i, 535i, 550i) from launch. The 520d for example has a 1,995cc four cylinder diesel featuring the latest generation common-rail direct injection and turbocharger with variable turbine geometry which increases power and efficiency. Producing 184hp at 4,000rpm, the 520d accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.1 seconds before going onto a top speed of 141mph. Fuel economy is exceptional with a combined fuel consumption figure of 56.5mpg (54.3mpg)* and a CO2 rating of 132g/km (137g/km)*, making the BMW 520d the most efficient car in its segment. Award-winning EfficientDynamics as standard The new BMW 5 Series Saloon comes with an array of EfficientDynamics technologies. The BMW 520d is the first 5 Series to come with Auto Start-Stop, reducing the engine idle period when coming to a short stop. All manual gearboxes will also come with an Optimum gearshift indicator to help drivers know when to change gear to optimise the car’s efficiency. Brake Energy Regeneration, which recharges the vehicle’s battery during engine over-run, is part of the 5 Series Saloon’s standard specification.

The New MINI Countryman

In September this year MINI will launch its latest, largest model - the first to offer MINI’s own breed of four wheel drive to the UK market. The MINI Countryman (formerly the Crossover Concept) will join the prestigious MINI family to become its fourth, very welcome member.

At launch the Countryman range will include five models, three petrol and two diesel, two of which will be ALL4 all wheel drive – the Cooper D ALL4 and Cooper S ALL4, with a MINI Cooper ALL4 version to follow in 2012. The ALL4 is a front wheel drive car in most normal circumstances, but when wheel slip on the front wheels is detected or if the car is being driven enthusiastically an electro-magnetic clutch, located on the rear axle, engages drive to the rear wheels to improve traction.

This exciting new model has the familiar MINI appearance, with a typical ‘wheel at each corner’, stance and short overhangs, albeit distinctly different to any that have gone before! It is 398 mm longer than a MINI Hatch, 316 mm wider and 170 mm higher, offering a staggering 1,170 litres total luggage capacity. This increased capacity and size means that MINI owners who love the brand will no longer need to move to another make when they need more space in their car.

Inside, the MINI Countryman is all about comfort, practicality and innovative style. From the four wide-opening doors to the high-opening rear hatch, it is easy and comfortable to get into and out of, and a dream to load. The interior is as stylish as you have come to expect from a MINI, dominated by iconic MINI design characteristics such as the trademark central speedometer and a host of funky interior gizmos.

MINI Countryman will make its World Debut at the Geneva Show in March and will go on sale in the UK in September 2010, with prices starting at a very affordable £18,000.

The staff at Stephen James had a great week last week as every single person across our dealerships had the opportunity to come and partake in one of our Vision and Values days. Together we looked at what sort of company we might imagine becoming and began to dare to think that there is a better way for business to be conducted.

We looked in depth at our 5 core values and began to engage about some of the changes we could begin to make to see these becoming a reality. It is my belief that if I and every member of my team can pursue these values rigorously then we can achieve our vision which centres around genuine care for our staff, our customers and those in the communities where we conduct our business.

MINI Crossover

The MINI Crossover is an expansion to the brand, creating a fourth model after the Hatch, Convertible and Clubman. The Crossover has 4 doors, 4 seats, is 4 metres long and has 4-wheel drive, making it not just a 4 x 4 but a 4 x 4 x 4 x 4. Taking design cues from the Clubman, it has a side opening boot door but its own distinctive shape due to the Crossover’s extra height (1.6 metres) which allows a higher driving position, the Crossover also adds something new in the form of a slide opening door on the driver’s side, adding extra flexibility when loading the car. Internally the MINI Crossover continues the strong design ethos of its predecessors with circular design features and easily customizable space. The new MINI Centre Rail runs from the dashboard through the middle of the car to the rear, using a unique fastening system to attach cup holders, storage units and entertainment consoles which can be easily passed between the front and the rear. The MINI Crossover is coming in 2010.

As I sat here this morning pondering what this might look like I felt that I had to tell Stephen James’ story as we journey and navigate our way towards delivering our company vision but also incorporate our journey within a wider business context. This blog, I hope, will capture the imagination of anyone who leads a business, is in management or who has a healthy appetite for change. I guess our communications to our customers by newsletter, direct mail and various html campaigns only give a flavour of what Stephen James is really all about. In the main these corporate exchanges do inform valued customers and potential customers about the latest offers and exciting products. What they don’t do is fully share the heart of the company. So these postings and musings will focus more on our aspirational vision for a more fulfilling and rewarding way to do business. The recent economic crisis if it has taught us anything has taught us that greed and profit focus alone will only lead us back into a reoccurring economic cycle which will see another crisis at some stage in the future. No amount of increased regulation will avoid this, what our businesses need is a change of heart which leads to a better, more sustainable set of business values.

MINI Coupé Concept to star at Frankfurt Show

The first classic Mini was presented to the public on 26 August 1959. Exactly fifty years on and nearly a decade into the life of new MINI, images of the stunning new MINI Coupe Concept are today released. Capturing the essence of MINI’s sporting appeal, the global press and public will see the MINI Coupe Concept in the metal for the first time when it was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on the 17th September 2009. The MINI Coupe Concept is designed to be the most dynamic and agile MINI ever built. Strictly a two-seater, the low roof line, compact dimensions, perfect axle load distribution and lightweight construction are all trademarks of a genuine sports car. A number of design icons feature on the MINI Coupe Concept. Large round headlights inclusive of black internal reflectors, a hexagonal radiator grille and low front spoiler mark the newcomer out as a true MINI. Unique exterior design cues include a bespoke rear spoiler, bonnet stripes extending to include the radiator grille and an entirely revised front air dam. The muscular stance of the car is a result of carefully calculated exterior dimensions. The MINI Coupe Concept is 1,356 mm high and the steep rake of the A-pillars is accentuated by the high waistline common to every MINI. Sat on attractive 18” triple-tone finish light alloy wheels, the concept is 3,714mm in length and 1,683mm wide. For the first time on a MINI, the weight-saving aluminium roof is an unbroken bridge shape and flows smoothly from A to C-pillars. The steep front rake stops above the heads of driver and front passenger and descends gently to the rear of the car, emphasising the wedge shape of the car and its sporty poise. The low rear end of the car ensures optimum air flow across the vehicle when in motion and in combination with the roof spoiler, minimises any aerodynamic interruption.

Inside, sports seats with strongly contoured side supports feature, as does a three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with multi-function controls. Two Chronoswiss clocks to the right and left of the rev counter provide a close link to earlier concept cars by MINI, bridging the gap between the analogue age of the classic Mini and the digital age of new MINI. One acts as a stop watch and the other a standard timepiece. A luggage capacity of 250 litres is offered and can be accessed at the rear by a tailgate which is hinged above the roof spoiler, meaning easy access to goods stowed in the rear. The bulkhead between the passenger and luggage compartments comes with a lockable opening, giving passengers access to the rear section at any time. The MINI Coupe Concept is engineered to receive the most powerful engine in the current MINI line-up. The highly-acclaimed 211hp, 1.6-litre twin scroll turbocharged power unit found in current John Cooper Works models offers CO2 emissions of just 165g/km and fuel efficiency of 40.9mpg (combined). MINI’s revered handling dynamics will be a highlight of the MINI Coupe Concept. Front wheel drive, powerful disc brakes on all four wheels, the front axle with McPherson spring struts and a centrally guided rear axle with aluminium longitudinal arms and anti-roll bars guarantee a safe, yet grin-inducing drive every time. With a Crossover model in the final stages of development and Hatch, Clubman and Convertible models currently on the roads in nearly 80 countries worldwide, MINI aims to offer a varied and exciting range of small premium cars to customers in the coming years. MINIMALISM technologies including Brake Energy Regeneration, Shift Point Display and Auto Start/Stop are key reasons to buy a MINI and have helped to position MINI at the forefront of highly efficient and environmentally aware performance car production. These technologies are sure to feature on future MINI derivatives. The MINI Coupe Concept takes traditional values of the MINI brand and combines them with the most advanced technologies to offer an exciting vision of the how MINI family may continue to grow.

The World’s First Sub-110G/KM Compact Executive Car

At the Frankfurt Motor Show (17-27 September), BMW presented the most fuel-efficient production BMW ever. The new BMW 320d EfficientDynamics saloon is the world’s first premium compact executive saloon to achieve a remarkable 68.9mpg on the combined cycle with only 109g/km of CO2 emissions. Why is 109g/km such an important figure? In an effort to encourage people to drive more fuel-efficient cars, the government first introduced Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) bands based on CO2 emissions in 2001. Falling under 110g/km means that the new 320d ED now sits in VED band B – as such, owners pay just £35 a year in road tax. Companies purchasing cars under 110g/km CO2 outright can take advantage of a 100 per cent first year capital writedown allowance – improving company cashflow – while company car drivers pay just 13 per cent Benefit In Kind tax. The result? Significantly reduced running costs for business drivers. How has BMW managed to achieve this? The new BMW 320d ED has been developed using the very latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies to reduce the amount of fuel required to power the car. The four-cylinder diesel engine has been intelligently modified to run more smoothly at lower revs, working hand-in-hand with longer gearing to reduce fuel consumption. Lowered suspension and aerodynamic alloy wheels also reduce drag. Together, this package of enhancements increases fuel efficiency resulting in lower CO2 emissions. Does this mean that performance now suffers? Not at all. With BMW continually developing even greater EfficientDynamics technologies, the 163hp 320d ED accelerates from standstill to 62mph in just 8.2 seconds and onto a top speed of 137mph. Vehicles with similar CO2 emissions typically take at least two seconds longer to reach 62mph. What features are available? Specification is on a par with a BMW 320d SE and includes two-zone air-conditioning, rear Park Distance Control, BMW Professional radio, multi-function leather steering wheel, Extended lighting and a unique alloy wheel design. BMW Unveils New Supercar Concept

When BMW’s Efficient Dynamics programme was launched in 2007, it immediately raised the technological bar for competitors, providing drivers with a range of cars that not only offered enhanced performance over their predecessors, but also unrivalled fuel efficiency and significantly reduced running costs. M3 performance, 99g/km CO2emissions The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car, unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, looks set to raise the bar higher still. Showcasing new advanced hybrid-drive technology, BMW’s trademark lightweight body construction and an ultra-aerodynamic design, the Vision EfficientDynamics concept delivers M3-rivalling performance with the fuel economy and the low running costs of a small car. BMW’s latest concept is powered by a new diesel-electric hybrid system. A 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine, which will debut in the next-generation BMW 1 Series, works in tandem with two electric motors, one at the front of the car and one at the rear. This unique combination allows the Vision EfficientDynamics to accelerate to 60mph in just 4.8 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155mph: all this while returning a combined consumption of 75.1mpg and emitting a mere 99 grams of CO2 per kilometre – just a third of the emissions of the current M3! Combined power Capable of running on either the electric motors for up to 31 miles or the diesel engine for 400 miles, the Vision EfficientDynamics concept car is also capable of combining both power sources. The onboard management system can utilise the power from all three sources when short bursts of speed are required, such as when overtaking or accelerating from junctions. The car’s performance is further enhanced by design details borrowed from the BMW F1 Sauber team. For example, the A-pillars not only support the roof, they also channel airflow cleanly along the side of the car while a flat under-tray improves high-speed stability and further lowers drag. Spacecraft technology The resultant design (pictured) is more than merely efficient; the floating rear LED lights, transparent roof and dramatic glass panel gull wing doors are sure to turn heads. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is practical too; those doors allow access to two rear seats, which can be tilted forwards to increase storage space in the boot. A new thermo-electric generator (originally developed for use on spacecraft) situated in the exhaust even creates its own electricity from the car’s exhaust gases to power the air conditioning, electronic seat adjustment and power steering.
